Do’s and Don’ts of Filing Hail Claim Damages for Policyholders

Do…. 1. Understand your policy and deductible

2. confirm physical damage by inspecting and collateral and verify weather data

3. determine if the repair/replacement costs exceed your deductible.

4. file promptly

5. Get an engineer report from an expert who doesn’t primarily work for insurers

6. get help from ICRS Public Adjusters especially if your claim is large and/or complex

Don’t…

1. wait for the next storm to file

2. worry about your premiums increasing if you file a claim due to act of nature (your rates will probably increase regardless)

Rating: At renewal, insurers may not increase premium for a residential or farm or ranch owners policy for claims resulting from:

• losses from natural causes;

• claims filed but not paid or payable; or

• claims prohibited by Insurance Code 544.353, relating to remediated appliance-related claims

( Texas Administrative Code Section 21.1004).

3. work with anyone who “eats” your deductible (this is illegal in TX)

4. wait if problems arise with your insurer to get help.

5. be ignored, bullied or pressured to accepting lowball offers to settle from your insurer.

Send us your underpaid or delayed claim and we’ll give you a 15 minute complimentary consultation to tell you how to get it settled.
